Artist Biography

Mark Hobbs is a British painter whose work reflects a dynamic evolution from bold acrylic compositions to refined oil landscapes rooted in the Impressionist tradition with a contemporary twist. Based in Hertfordshire, his artistic journey began in childhood under the guidance of his father, Ralph Hobbs, an accomplished car artist known for his exacting standards. Hours spent drawing wheels became early lessons in geometry and proportion for Mark, honing skills that would later underpin his approach to form and composition.

Though originally set on a path toward stage and theatre design, life took Mark along a different path into a successful career in IT sales and marketing, and it wasn’t until the global lockdowns of 2020 that he returned fully to his creative roots. During this intense period of isolation, he produced over 30 large-scale acrylic works that drew heavily from his set design experience, brimming with theatrical energy and colour. These works culminated in his debut exhibition in London, HobbART Unleashed.

Since 2020 Mark has made a decisive turn toward oil painting from acrylics. This shift coincided with his discovery of the Rockport schools of American Impressionism, especially through his online studies with the New Masters Academy.

Today, Mark’s work explores the quiet lyricism of the English landscape, particularly his native Hertfordshire. His current collection reflects a maturing voice rooted in painterly tradition, yet alive with the energy and vibrancy of the landscape he portrays. Each work balances classical influence with a contemporary vitality, capturing not only the spirit of place but also the dynamic movement and colour that bring the English countryside to life.
